Resources for City Hall

SCOPE-City-Hall

Local governments have a lot of power to make changes – and they’re important partners in making your community healthier!

Getting municipal support can help to build healthy choices into the fabric of the community. Governments and city planners can help ensure there are safe, healthy outdoor places for children and families to play and exercise, make sure free, clean drinking water is easily accessible for everyone, and make health a priority in plans and budgets – there are lots of ideas to work on. People at City Hall are also likely to know who else is doing similar work, and can help link people together to build partnerships. It’s also important for local government to be strong supporters of the Live 5-2-1-0 message, and show that they care about healthy kids and creating a healthy community for residents.

Local governments can be strong supporters of the Live 5-2-1-0 message, and are well positioned to help build healthy choices into the fabric of the community. There are lots of ideas on how your city hall can get involved, and we can help get you started! Check out our Summary for Local Government resource below to learn a bit more about Live 5-2-1-0 and what local government can do to share and support the message in your community.

One of the most important things that a group of stakeholders can do in a community is to come together to create a plan. This can involve outlining common goals, conducting an environmental scan and needs assessment, and planning priorities for action. This can also be a great way for local government to identify policies which could be targeted to help support healthy living in your community.

During SCOPE’s first phase, we worked in partnership with Abbotsford and Prince George to help with the creation of their community action plans. We’ve shared these communities’ plans below, as they can serve as useful examples of different approaches, and might help if you are considering creating an action plan with your community stakeholders.

Sharing the Live 5-2-1-0 message helps to create awareness, and shows members of your community that local government cares about having a healthy community for children. This can be as simple as putting up Live 5-2-1-0 Posters in City Hall and other buildings, or having Live 5-2-1-0 Fact Sheets on display for people to take home. We have these and other resources for sharing the Live 5-2-1-0 message below, and check out the Media sector for more!

In Abbotsford, through the support of SCOPE and the City of Abbotsford’s Parks and Recreation Department, Healthy Abbotsford launched a new and innovative idea to support kids to Live 5-2-1-0 – the Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes! In October 2014, three Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes were installed in three different city parks, all filled with play equipment such as balls, nets, hula hoops and frisbees, and information and ideas for fun active games to play. Families can access the boxes at any time for free by signing up to receive the access code to unlock the boxes through the Healthy Abbotsford website. The Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes support kids and families in achieving the recommendations in the Live 5-2-1-0 message by making it easier for families to access free, fun ways to learn new games, get their hands on equipment, and play actively together outside. Watch a clip from Global TV about the Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes here.

There are now Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes in seven different communities with many more in the planning or implementation stage. Compiling the advice and experience from our Live 5-2-1-0 community partners, we have developed a Live 5-2-1-0 Playbox How-To Guide which provides interested communities with information and answers to commonly asked questions about this unique, fun initiative. You can download the guide below.
