BC Children’s Hospital

In the spring of 2016, SCOPE launched a multi-phase project to bring the Live 5-2-1-0 initiative to the BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) ‘community’. With over 85,000 children and youth accessing services at BCCH each year, we have an incredible opportunity to help create an environment where children, youth and their families can learn the skills they need to adopt healthy habits and where staff promote and support healthy lifestyles.

A needs assessment has been conducted to gather the perspectives of hospital-based health care providers and patients and their families on current practices/experiences related to health promotion at BCCH, as well as their perceived needs related to delivering (health care provider) or receiving (patient/family) health promotion counselling during clinical encounters. This assessment included online surveys and in-person focus groups. A summary of the health care provider survey’s findings is displayed in this infographic. Based on the results of the needs assessment, the SCOPE team developed a health promotion toolkit specifically tailored for pediatric healthcare providers and is currently in the process of piloting and evaluating the toolkit in three Ambulatory clinics at the hospital.

To strengthen the discussion patients and families are having with their health care providers in the clinics, we are expanding the marketing of the Live 5-2-1-0 message to the common areas of the hospital and to support the creation of a healthier hospital environment where children and families are supported in reaching the 5-2-1-0 goals.

We would like to thank Safeway and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation for their generous support in bringing this initiative to the hospital.
