Fair PharmaCare Plan

Description: The Fair PharmaCare plan covers single individuals’ or families’ eligible costs for a number of prescription medications, as well as certain medical supplies and pharmacy services.Citizens of BC who are enrolled in the Medical Services Plan (covered public health insurance plan available to all residents in BC) and have filed an income tax return for the relevant taxation year (that is, two years ago), may be eligible for the Fair PharmaCare Plan, depending on their net income.There are also 7 other PharmaCare plans for certain eligible BC residents, check the website for more details.

Child Care – Financial Assistance

Description: A child care allowance is available to help low income families in BC with the cost of child care:

  • Families that earn up to $111,000 may quality for funding
  • Families may be eligible for full or partial coverage, depending on their circumstances and income

BC Healthy Kids Program

Description: A program that helps low income families with the costs of basic dental care, optical care, and hearing assistance for their children.

The Medical Services Plan offers rates that are affordable for most BC residents. Assistance is available for those who have financial need and cannot afford to pay their premiums. Check the website for more details.

HOW TO REGISTER

You don’t need to apply. Your children are eligible if:

  • Your family has been approved for Medical Service Plan supplementary benefits.
  • They are under 19 years of age

Show your child’s CareCard or BC Services Card when you arrive at the dental, optical or audiology office. Ask them to confirm coverage before the appointment. Be sure to ask if there will be any extra charges that are not covered.

BC Early Childhood Tax Benefit

Description: The Early Childhood Tax Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment of up to $55 per month made to eligible families to help with the cost of raising young children under age 6.

Benefits are based on the number of children in the family and the family’s net income.

Greater Vancouver Food Bank

Description: The Greater Vancouver Food Bank provides quality food 2 to 3 times a week to individuals and families in BC. The Greater Vancouver Food Bank focuses on quality of food, food access and choice, and building food knowledge. Participant privacy is always respected.

Description: An agency that offers not-for-profit grocery markets, bulk food ordering, and prepaid gift certificates. Quest Food Exchange aims to provide healthy options at affordable prices for those who need it.

Crabtree Corner

Description: Crabtree Corner supports families in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside with various programs and services. These include hot meal programs, community kitchen programs, an interactive program that teaches healthy eating habits, and much more.

Description: A partnership between the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets and the BC Government that is currently operating in 54 communities. Local farmers’ markets work with local organizations to provide priority populations with coupons .

Food Skills for Families

Description: A program connecting people in the kitchen, teaching hands-on cooking skills and making healthy eating, grocery shopping and cooking easy, quick and fun.

Participation is free, and the program has been adapted to meet the needs of five specific groups: Indigenous, Newcomers to Canada, Punjabi speaking, Seniors, and low income families.
