Resources for Rec & Leisure Centres
Recreation centres offer a number of services and resources that fit directly with the Live 5-2-1-0 message of promoting healthy lifestyles, making them key allies in sharing and supporting the message.
In SCOPE’s partner communities, rec and leisure centres have been centrally involved in a number of Live 5-2-1-0 initiatives. By providing opportunities to try new and fun physical activities, and offering learning opportunities to share information and skills to promote healthy living choices, rec and leisure centres are very important community partners in helping kids and families choose healthy lifestyles.
SCOPE and our partner communities have developed a number of ready-made resources and tools that can be adapted and adopted for use by recreation centres to support the Live 5-2-1-0 message!
This checklist provides an opportunity for your team, organization, or sector to reflect on its progress in helping to create a healthier community environment for children and families. It lists some ideas, and examples from our Live 5-2-1-0 partners, on ways to promote the 5-2-1-0 guidelines and support healthy behaviours in the recreation sector, and has additional space to add in your own.
SCOPE has supported our partner Healthy Abbotsford in developing and implementing a pilot initiative to help the Abbotsford Recreation Centre (ARC) share and support the Live 5-2-1-0 message. Currently in its second round of pilot testing, this initiative aims to increase the capacity of rec program facilitators to share the Live 5-2-1-0 message with children and youth enrolled in rec programs, and to support the message with action by including Live 5-2-1-0-themed activities in their rec program curriculum.
Following the conclusion of pilot testing for this program, we will be sharing information and materials to support other communities interested in implementing similar programs. Check back soon for these new resources, or contact us for more information!
Another way recreation and leisure centres can get on board is by sharing the Live 5-2-1-0 message to help create awareness. This can be as simple as putting up Live 5-2-1-0 Posters or banners around your rec centre, or having Live 5-2-1-0 Fact Sheets on display for people to take home. We have some resources for sharing the Live 5-2-1-0 message below, and check out the Media sector for more!
Through its partnership with SCOPE, Healthy Abbotsford has developed a Live 5-2-1-0 Activity & Resource Toolkit which provides activities, materials and information that service providers can use to share and support the Live 5-2-1-0 message. The Toolkit would be useful for providers such as daycare workers, early childhood educators, teachers, coaches, recreation program facilitators, community health workers, and even parents. We’ve adapted Abbotsford’s version so that this Toolkit can be easily used in other communities too!
The Live 5-2-1-0 Activity & Resources Toolkit has sections specific to children age 0-4 years old and age 5-12 years old. For 5-12 year olds, the Toolkit has eleven different Live 5-2-1-0 activity ideas (including instructions, and in some cases materials), as well as reading suggestions for books available in local libraries. The Toolkit also provides information for individuals, organizations, childcare providers and schools on further steps that can be taken to share and support Live 5-2-1-0.
The Live 5-2-1-0 Activity & Resource Toolkit can be downloaded as a PDF file and used right away, or communities can download the adaptable Adobe InDesign version and add their own community logos and local program information. If you would like to be able to have hard copies of the non-adaptable version of this Toolkit professionally printed and bound, please contact us for the necessary file – it’s too big to download here!
In Abbotsford, through the support of SCOPE and the City of Abbotsford’s Parks and Recreation Department, Healthy Abbotsford launched a new and innovative idea to support kids to Live 5-2-1-0 – the Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes! In October 2014, three Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes were installed in three different city parks, all filled with play equipment such as balls, nets, hula hoops and frisbees, and information and ideas for fun active games to play. Families can access the boxes at any time for free by signing up to receive the access code to unlock the boxes through the Healthy Abbotsford website. The Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes support kids and families in achieving the recommendations in the Live 5-2-1-0 message by making it easier for families to access free, fun ways to learn new games, get their hands on equipment, and play actively together outside. Watch a clip from Global TV about the Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes here.
There are now Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes in seven different communities with many more in the planning or implementation stage. Compiling the advice and experience from our Live 5-2-1-0 community partners, we have developed a Live 5-2-1-0 Playbox How-To Guide which provides interested communities with information and answers to commonly asked questions about this unique, fun initiative. You can download the How-To Guide below.
Are you looking for game ideas to get kids moving and having fun? Check out our Live 5-2-1-0 Outdoor Games Booklet – with twenty different games, there is something for everyone!
For each game there are instructions, a list of materials required, and a recommended age for participants. You can download and print off the Live 5-2-1-0 Outdoor Games Booklet below. Use these games in tandem with a Live 5-2-1-0 Playbox, or just on their own!
To reflect the diversity of children growing up in British Columbia, and to highlight the universality of children’s desire and need to play, our partners at the City of Surrey, the City of New Westminster, and Fraser Health have created the Around the World Outdoor Games Booklet. Drawing inspiration from the existing Live 5-2-1-0 Outdoor Games Booklet, this resource is an inclusive compilation of over 20 popular games played by children in many countries and cultures around the world!
SCOPE, in partnership with ViaSport and Healthy Abbotsford, have created four short videos that demonstrate how to integrate the Live 5-2-1-0 message into physical literacy activities. Each video features a classic kids’ game that has been adapted to support the Live 5-2-1-0 message – either by increasing its physical activity level or by promoting healthy food choices in a fun way.
These videos are meant to provide game ideas and instructions for teachers, coaches, and program facilitators while also showcasing how Live 5-2-1-0 messaging can easily be layered into existing activities. Follow the links below to watch the videos!
