Resources for Schools
From kindergarten through high school, kids and youth spend the majority of their day at school. They are not just learning the alphabet and arithmetic – they are learning how to make daily choices, and what it means to live a healthy life.
Schools have unique opportunities to share lessons about healthy choices in ways that make them fun and memorable. Every community is different, and schools will have unique systems, resources and cultures. However, all schools share the responsibility to make their environments healthier for children, and to help children make healthier choices as they grow.
There is lots of incredible work happening all over the province to help schools achieve this goal. SCOPE and our partner communities have developed a number of ready-made resources and tools that can be adapted and adopted for use in your community’s schools to share and support the Live 5-2-1-0 message!
The Live 5-2-1-0 Schools Resource explains how schools can use Live 5-2-1-0 to connect their health promotion efforts to a collaborative, whole-of-community approach. It highlights Live 5-2-1-0’s alignment with the four pillars of the Comprehensive School Health model as well as BC’s new curriculum. The resource also provides examples of how schools can use Live 5-2-1-0 as a consistent health message as well as a framework for action, tying together both new and existing school-based initiatives that promote healthy eating and physical activity. The Live 5-2-1-0 Schools Resource would be a useful tool for school administrators, teachers, principals, parents, and even student health committees.
The Live 5-2-1-0 Schools Resource can be downloaded as a regular PDF file and used right away, or as a professional print-ready PDF file.
SCOPE’s partner Healthy Abbotsford has implemented a successful initiative along with the local School District to include the Live 5-2-1-0 message in all student planners in most of the elementary schools across Abbotsford. Through the support of First Class Planners, a Canadian company producing student planners with an office nearby in Chilliwack, Healthy Abbotsford was able to have the Live 5-2-1-0 message automatically included on the back cover and the movable bookmark of all student planners ordered for Abbotsford elementary schools for the 2013-14 academic year.
To support other communities and school districts that may be interested in adopting this initiative, we have made adaptable versions of the Live 5-2-1-0 graphic files for the back cover and bookmark available below. These files can be downloaded and adapted by adding local community and/or school logos, and used in student planners in your community. You can contact us for more information on how you can make this happen!
Through its partnership with SCOPE, Healthy Abbotsford has developed a Live 5-2-1-0 Activity & Resource Toolkit which provides activities, materials and information that service providers can use to share and support the Live 5-2-1-0 message. The Toolkit would be useful for providers such as daycare workers, early childhood educators, teachers, coaches, recreation program facilitators, community health workers, and even parents. We’ve adapted Abbotsford’s version so that this Toolkit can be easily used in other communities too!
The Live 5-2-1-0 Activity & Resources Toolkit has sections specific to children age 0-4 years old and age 5-12 years old. For 5-12 year olds, the Toolkit has eleven different Live 5-2-1-0 activity ideas (including instructions, and in some cases materials), as well as reading suggestions for books available in local libraries. The Toolkit also provides information for individuals, organizations, childcare providers and schools on further steps that can be taken to share and support Live 5-2-1-0.
The Live 5-2-1-0 Activity & Resource Toolkit can be downloaded as a PDF file and used right away, or communities can download the adaptable Adobe InDesign version and add their own community logos and local program information. If you would like to be able to have hard copies of the non-adaptable version of this Toolkit professionally printed and bound, please contact us for the necessary file – it’s too big to download here!
The Live 5-2-1-0 Weekly Goal Tracker Sheet can be used to help kids set goals for daily healthy behaviours relating to the elements of the 5-2-1-0 message, and track their daily progress towards achieving their goals. Goals can be personalized, and ideas and tips are suggested to help make healthy choices easier.
The Live 5-2-1-0 Weekly Goal Tracker Sheet is available for download below, and can be adapted to add your community or school’s logo!
SCOPE supported our pilot community of Prince George in developing and implementing a school-district wide program called Kids Helping Kids: Healthy is Happy. This program aimed to support a coordinated roll-out across the School District of the Action Schools! BC curriculum, and provide leadership and mentorship training to elementary and high school students to increase access to fun physical activity opportunities at schools.
We will be sharing more information and a ‘how-to’ resource for other communities interested in adapting this program soon! Check back often, or contact us for more information.
SCOPE, in partnership with ViaSport and Healthy Abbotsford, has created four short videos that demonstrate how to integrate the Live 5-2-1-0 message into physical literacy activities. Each video features a classic kids’ game that has been adapted to support the Live 5-2-1-0 message – either by increasing its physical activity level or by promoting healthy food choices in a fun way.
These videos are meant to provide game ideas and instructions for teachers, coaches, and program facilitators while also showcasing how Live 5-2-1-0 messaging can easily be layered into existing activities. Follow the links below to watch the currently released video(s), and check back soon for additional ones to be released in the coming months!
